Our History and Purpose
The Mont O'Brien Association was established in the year 2000, with the purpose of protecting flora and fauna on the Mont O'Brien public territory.
In 2003, members built a right-of-way access road to Mont O'Brien, as well as the Mary Haydon Hiking Trail to lookouts on the Mont.
Members decided to ask the Québec government to establish the territory as a biodiversity reserve, and in 2008, the Projected Biodiversity Reserve was officially established.
In 2022, the Reserve was enlarged by a Decree from the Québec Environment Minister (see image A: “Decree”).
In October of 2024, the Association proposed a 9.5 km2 strategically-located enlargement for better ecosystems and biodiversity protection within the Reserve (see image B: “Proposal”), under Québec's "30% by 2030" Program for Southern Québec and the Province's Natural Heritage Act.
We provide nature access on the Mary Haydon Trail and the Mont O'Brien Biodiversity Reserve, along with public education on nature and ecosystems. Low-cost family membership and volunteer opportunities on the Reserve are available.
